We have a simple mission: getting local books into local libraries, and making sure that as many people as possible read them.

In our first year, we raised about R100,000 from mostly small donors. With that money, we gave more then 1,500 books to schools, libraries and orphanages across South Africa. We gave books on African history, classics by Nadine Gordimer, and contemporary novels by Zakes Mda, Zukiswa Wanner and Niq Mhlongo.

We used that money to develop a new collaboration with the Johannesburg Development Agency, which will spend up to R5 million to create a Literary District around the City Library, linking it together with booksellers, readers and writers.

Now we're ready for a new round of giving, and we're choosing which books we'll send out this year.
